Launch of CrossRef Web Services

***THIS IS AN IMPORTANT COMMUNICATION THAT WE ASK ALL CROSSREF MEMBER BUSINESS CONTACTS TO READ IN ITS ENTIRETY***

We are very pleased to announce the beta launch of CrossRef Web Services.
CrossRef Web Services (CWS) is a suite of tools to enable authorized search and other web service partners to collect metadata on a cross-publisher basis to streamline web crawling. The program includes a variety of metadata dissemination tools and provides standard terms of use for search engines, libraries, and other partners to use the metadata available from CrossRef Web Services. CrossRef members are not obligated to participate.

This initial beta launch of CWS is for partnerships with authorized search providers only. The CrossRef Board approved the terms and conditions of the CWS Authorized Search Partner Agreement in May of this year. CrossRef expects one or two search partners to sign the agreement in 2006. When a CWS partnership is executed, CrossRef members will be sent the executed agreement for review, along with a case-by-case opt out form, with clear instructions not to return the form unless they wish to opt out of that particular partnership, or to exclude references or specific titles from their available metadata. Publishers will have 30 days to respond but will always have the right to exclude their data at any time for any reason.

Authorized CWS search partners will be charged $2,500-60,000 per year depending upon the gross revenues of the partner and the number of CrossRef members who agree (by not opting out) to have their metadata included in the service. To view the fee table and CWS Authorized Search Partner agreement, you may go to:
http://www.crossref.org/04intermediaries/web_services_fees.html. In addition to the case-by-case opt out, CrossRef members can select not to participate in CrossRef Web Services at all and thereby receive no further communications regarding CWS partnerships in future.

If you expect to participate and wish to be notified of new CWS partnerships as they are negotiated, you do not need to do anything in response to this announcement. ONLY IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO OPT OUT OF *ALL* CWS PARTICIPATION, PLEASE SIGN THE GLOBAL OPT OUT FORM ( which you can request from Amy Brand abrand@crossref.org) AND RETURN VIA FAX TO 781-295-0077 AT YOUR EARLIEST CONVENIENCE.

Please contact Amy Brand at abrand@crossref.org with any questions, concerns, or comments you may have about the new program or about these procedures.

Thank you,
CrossRef Staff

Book references

I'm happy to announce that we are starting to see links from references in books to books and book chapters. OUP's Oxford Scholarlship Online is now linking references to books and are picking up links to some World Bank books.

An example is in:
Swinnen, Johan F.M., and Scott Rozelle. From Marx and Mao to the Market - The Economics and Politics of Agricultural Transition. Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2006. Oxford Scholarship Online. Oxford University Press. 23 June 106

OVER HALF A MILLION BOOK DOIS NOW REGISTERED IN CROSSREF

Lynnfield, MA June 1, 2006. CrossRef, the reference-linking service for scholarly and professional content, announced today that it had surpassed the half-million mark in the number of book title and chapter DOIs registered in its database. By virtue of being in CrossRef, these books and chapters are readily inter-linkable with the 20 million-plus other content items (mainly journal articles) publishers have registered. This enables the reader of online works to go directly from a journal article to a cited book chapter, or vice versa, just by clicking on a reference.

CrossRef has been adding books and major reference works (MRWs) to its cross-publisher linking network since 2004. Any scholarly or professional book can be registered at the title or chapter level, and registration of works with multiple chapters is steeply discounted. OUP’s Oxford Dictionary of National Biography (ODNB, at http://www.oxforddnb.com) is one example of an MRW containing DOIs assigned at the granular entry level; the ODNB alone contains over 65,000 DOIs. Other publishers actively registering books with CrossRef include Springer-Verlag, Taylor & Francis, Elsevier, the American Psychological Association, Humana Press, Karger, and John Wiley & Sons.

According to Craig Van Dyck, Vice President of STM Operations at Wiley, "CrossRef has a done great job of enhancing the online journal literature with reference linking and other important functionality. Now CrossRef is making significant progress with the scholarly book literature as well. Books are more complex and so will require commitment by CrossRef members to provide users with the linking functionality that they desire and that CrossRef can enable. Multiple Resolution, with DOIs pointing to a variety of relevant resources and linking options, is especially important for books."

CrossRef began offering Multiple Resolution – “CrossRef-MR” – services on a trial basis late last year. The majority of today’s DOIs employ single resolution, where a DOI is associated with one URL that typically points to online content at a publisher website. CrossRef-MR makes links more intelligent by providing a standardized way of associating a variety of resources with a DOI and making links to those resources available to many different services. CrossRef-MR thus enables the dissemination of enriched, publisher-controlled linking information, which can be pulled in and used by A&I databases, subscription agents, OpenURL resolvers, and other third parties. CrossRef envisions widespread use of CrossRef-MR as instances of content being hosted in multiple locations increase. Other applications include linking to supplemental or related information, and to purchase options and rights clearance services.

CrossRef is a not-for-profit membership association founded and directed by publishers, currently representing over 1600 publishers and societies. CrossRef operates a cross-publisher citation linking system, and is an official DOI (Digital Object Identifier) registration agency. More information is available at http://www.crossref.org.
