This is a reminder that after 18 months of membership, all CrossRef members should have implemented reference/outbound linking.
Please visit the golive report http://www.crossref.org/06members/50go-live.html to see if you are listed as outbound linking. If you are outbound linking and have informed us of doing so, you should have a "yes" listed under the Reference Links Live column.
If you are in fact currently adding DOIs to the references in your publications in order to link out, but are not yet marked in the golive report as doing so, please let us know as soon as possible via an email message to annat@crossref.org. This will allow us to update our records appropriately.
If technical issues are preventing you from implementing outbound linking, please contact us and we will gladly help with the implementation.

Lynnfield MA, July 12, 2006. CrossRef, the cross-publisher linking network with over 1,600 participating publishers, announced today that it had reached an agreement with Microsoft Corp. who will become the first official CrossRef Web Services Search Partner. CrossRef will provide Microsoft with a bulk feed of metadata from hundreds of participating CrossRef member publishers.
CrossRef Web Services offers an easy-to-use tool for authorized search partners to collect metadata on a cross-publisher basis to streamline web crawling. The program also provides standard terms and conditions for search engines using the cross-publisher metadata available through CrossRef. Just as the core CrossRef linking service removes the need for bilateral linking agreements among publishers, the Search Partner Program removes the need for bilateral agreements covering use of metadata between publishers and search providers. Participation in CrossRef Web Services is optional for CrossRef member-publishers.
“We are very happy to have Microsoft as the first CrossRef Web Services Search Partner and we look forward to adding other partners in future,” said Ed Pentz, Executive Director of CrossRef. “CrossRef’s mission is to enable researchers and scholars to get to authoritative primary content and CrossRef Web Services will enable this to happen by streamlining the delivery of Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) for persistent linking and authoritative metadata.”
“Microsoft is dedicated to working cooperatively with industry associations such as CrossRef, who have made it their mission to help students and researchers quickly find authoritative academic research,” said Danielle Tiedt, General Manager, Windows Live Premium Search at Microsoft Corp. “We are excited to support CrossRef’s Web Services as we both strive to streamline and enhance the online research experience.”
Microsoft is using CrossRef Web Services to assist in the indexing of scholarly content for Windows Live Academic Search, a beta of which was launched in April 2006. This new search service is designed to help students, researchers and university faculty conduct research across a spectrum of academic journals. The program is a cooperative effort between Windows Live Search, CrossRef, and several leading publishers. Windows Live Academic Search can be found at http://academic.live.com.
For CrossRef Web Services terms and conditions of use and information on pricing, please go to www.crossref.org. CrossRef is a non-profit membership association, founded and directed by publishers. Its mission is to improve access to published scholarship through collaborative technologies. CrossRef operates a cross-publisher citation linking system, and is an official DOI (Digital Object Identifier) registration agency. The CrossRef Institutional Repositories Committee (IRC) , chaired by Bernie Rous at ACM, has developed a CrossRef Glossary - (http://www.crossref.org/08downloads/cr_glossary_1.pdf, PDF, 69k) containing common vocabulary to be used in CrossRef's policies and guidelines concerning different versions of articles and what gets assigned a DOI. Development of the Glossary was lead by Carol Richman (Sage) and Bob Hecht (Informa). CrossRef members are encouraged to review the Glossary and provide feedback to the IRC at - irc"at"crossref.org.
Important work regarding definitions for versions of journal articles is being done by a NISO/ALPSP working group . Bernie Rousis also on the NISO/ALPSP working group and the plan is to coordinate the CrossRef Glossary with the final output of the NISO/ALPSP working group.
NISO/ALPSP Working Group on Versions of Journal Articles - http://www.niso.org/committees/Journal_versioning/JournalVer_comm.html
The CrossRef Institutional Repositories Committee , chaired by Bernie Rous at ACM, has addressed the document versioning and citation problem by recommending that standard language be used when authors post versions of authoritative content to their personal home pages, to employer websites, or to Institutional Repositories. By being consistent in their instructions to authors CrossRef member publishers can help ensure that users can get to the authoritative version of the content and that a DOI is available to persistently cite the authoritative version.
The CrossRef Guidelines for Standard Citations in Author Postings (http://www.crossref.org/08downloads/author_guidelines.pdf) are available on the CrossRef website. General guidelines are available on the "Guidelines" page (http://www.crossref.org/02publishers/guidelines.html)
In repository and self-archiving, the author version of a document should contain a full citation to the formally published work and a persistent DOI link to enable users to locate the definitive version of the work. CrossRef is also working to have repositories retrieve DOIs automatically in cases where the DOI isn’t provided by the author.
Publishers can help their authors follow these Guidelines by emailing each author the final citation and DOI to insert in their posted copies.
Publishers may also find it appropriate to reference these Guidelines in their copyright transfer forms, or include them in self-archiving/posting policies to help familiarize authors with them.
