4th National Integrity in Science Conference

The Center for Science in the Public Interest
4th National Integrity in Science Conference
July 11, 2008. Washington, DC, 9 a.m.-5:30 p.m.
Rejuvenating Public Sector Science

A conference on restoring independent regulatory science
Special session:
“A Common Standard for Journals' Conflict of Interest Disclosure”
Conflict of interest reporting in the scientific and medical literature has come under increasing scrutiny in recent years. Failures to disclose conflicts of interest have become front page news, and a major embarrassment to publishers, editors, and professional societies. At this special afternoon session of the Center for Science in the Public Interest’s “Rejuvenating Public Sector Science” conference, panelists will discuss a Model Conflict of Interest Disclosure Policy for use by scientific and medical journals. This model policy was developed over the past year by a group of editors and bioethicists as one possible approach to reducing the incidence of these recurring scandals. Sheldon Krimsky, Professor of Urban and Environmental Policy at Tufts University, will present the problem; Merrill Goozner, Director, Integrity in Science, Center for Science in the Public Interest, and Thomas Babor, Associate Editor-in-Chief, Addiction, will discuss the proposal; and Hugh A. Tilson, Editor-in-Chief, Environmental Health Perspectives, and Jeremy Theobald of the UK’s Committee on Publication Ethics will respond to the proposal. Please join us!

CROSSCHECK PLAGIARISM SCREENING SERVICE LAUNCHES TODAY

LYNNFIELD MA, June 19, 2008. – CrossRef announced today the official launch of CrossCheck, a new initiative to aid publishers in verifying the originality of scholarly content. Following on the success of CrossRef’s recent pilot of CrossCheck, this service is now open to all CrossRef member publishers.

CrossRef partnered with iParadigms, LLC, in creating CrossCheck powered by iThenticate (https://crosscheck.ithenticate.com). CrossRef members who choose to participate can verify the originality of works submitted for publication using the iParadigms iThenticate service to check against a vast database of proprietary as well as open web content.

The CrossCheck database is already slated to cover over 20 million journal articles from the following participating publishers: Association for Computing Machinery, American Society of Neuroradiology, BMJ Publishing Group, Elsevier, Institute of Electrical & Electronics Engineers, International Union of Crystallography, Nature Publishing Group, Oxford University Press, Sage, Informa UK (Taylor & Francis), and Wiley Blackwell. With the launch today, both publisher participation and the CrossCheck database should grow quickly.

Until now, there was no automated way to check submissions against previous publications because the published literature had not been indexed and “text fingerprinted” for this purpose. According to Ed Pentz, CrossRef’s Executive Director, “CrossCheck is only as strong as the collective whole. It was important that the pilot publishers joined on but now we need the rest of the CrossRef members to join this initiative. We are happy that publishers such as Sage, Oxford University Press and Nature Publishing Group have agreed to participate in addition to the pilot publishers. We anticipate expanding the database of content very rapidly.”

PubMed Central Links to Publisher Full Text

A CrossRef Member Briefing is available that explains how PubMed Central (PMC) links to publisher full text, how PMC uses DOIs and how PMC should be using DOIs. The briefing is entitled "Linking to Publisher Full Text from PubMed Central" (PDF 85k).

CrossRef considers it very important the PMC uses DOIs as the main means to link to the publisher version of record for an article and we are recommending that publishers try to convince PMC to use DOIs in an automated way. Almost all of the PMC articles contain DOIs but they aren't linked. This seems like a waste considering that publishers have invested a lot in CrossRef and DOIs as unique identifiers and persistent links.

This issue will be of interest to anyone who publishers journal articles that are the result of NIH funding and fall under the NIH Public Access Policy .
