New CrossRef support system to help you get answers.

Do you have a technical question for CrossRef that you just can't seem to answer?

Your first stop should be the CrossRef Help. It's like the Great Big Book of Everything.

But if you've tried that and then asked your esteemed colleagues, friends, and even your cat, but still feel stumped, we have a new support system.

Go to http://support.crossref.org, create an account and submit your question. The system will allow you to track your support requests. You may also continue to e-mail questions directly to support@crossref.org.

We promise that this is the best and fastest way to get answers to your technical questions. Even if you are best friends with our staff, you'll get a faster and more accurate answer through the support system. Really.

Best Practice--Use CrossRef DOIs in Publisher RSS Feeds and as Permalinks

This icon, known as the "feed icon" ...

Image via Wikipedia

I had an interesting conversation today with someone who was complaining that some major publishers use internal URLs in their RSS feeds instead of using CrossRef DOIs. We have also found publisher sites that give instructions to "Cite this article" using a permalink that is a URL rather than a CrossRef DOI.

It's a better idea to use CrossRef DOIs to link to your material whenever you can. RSS feeds are increasingly being used not only by individuals, but by programs. URLs decay and die. CrossRef DOIs do not.

We remind you that the TicTocs Best Practice Guidelines for publisher RSS feeds recommend the use of DOIs. (You can find the Best Practices here: http://oxford.crossref.org/best_practice/rss/.)

Just DOI it!
