Plagiarism Discussed at ISMTE Conference

Earlier this week I had the pleasure of attending the European meeting of the International Society of Managing and Technical Editors in Oxford. The day was split in to two sessions, with the morning devoted to plagiarism detection and management. I was asked to give an update on CrossCheck, and was followed by Alice Malhador from Institute of Physics Publishing, who presented case studies from five different journals. Like many publishers, IOP Publishing is letting each title decide how to implement plagiarism screening; as Alice explained, the "personality, scope and size of a journal" usually determines how much content is screened and when. The common theme across all five cases, however, was that CrossCheck and the iThenticate software had helped to raise the quality of the published articles and become a useful pre-refereeing tool.
As we went on to discuss some additional case studies it was apparent that plagiarism screening is rapidly becoming a key part of the editorial process for many journals. A quick poll of the sixty attendees showed around half already participating in CrossCheck, and most of those had discovered issues that might have otherwise gone undetected.

The afternoon session focussed on social media, with Geoffrey Bilder exploring the application of social media to scholarly publishing, and Mark Patterson from PLoS showing how PLoS journals are experimenting with web 2.0 tools.

Many thanks to the organisers and ISMTE members for an excellent and very interesting conference.

Researchers: help test online journals, get a $100 Amazon gift card

Publishers and Libraries: Please share this notice with researchers. Feel free to adapt this text.

Dynamic Diagrams and CrossRef are seeking researchers to take part in a usability study of online journals. This is a great opportunity for you to influence web resources that you and other researchers use regularly. Participants who are selected and complete the 90-minute study will be compensated with an Amazon gift card worth $100 (US dollars or an equivalent amount in your currency). Studies will be taking place in late October or early November, 2010.

In this usability study, individual participants like you complete a set of tasks online, using prototype journal articles. We observe you and ask questions to determine how well the journal features meet your needs. We use the information to improve the online journal features. This is an individual study, not a focus group.

Studies will take place online -- you use your own computer, web browser, internet connection and telephone to participate from your location.

If you are interested, please fill out this brief survey to determine whether your background matches our needs for the study. We are unable to accept inquiries by telephone or email.

We will contact selected participants closer to the study dates to confirm your participation, and choose a mutually convenient time for your session. Please note that not all eligible participants will be chosen. Study participants must have access to a computer, telephone, and internet and be able to read and converse in English.
