CrossRef's Carol Anne Meyer at the Charleston Conference

Carol Anne Meyer will be at the Charleston Conference next week speaking at the Saturday Innovation Sessions about CrossMark.

CrossMark is the upcoming CrossRef service that will highlight the value of publisher-certified and maintained scholarly content.

Learn more about her session below.

End User Tools for Evaluating Scholarly Content
Location: Francis Marion, Bridgeview Room

Multiple versions of scholarly content (from author websites, institutional repositories, government archives, subject specific digital libraries, aggregator collections and publisher websites) make it difficult for users to locate the most recent
version of a document or to ascertain if the document has had any updates or even been retracted. This session describes
tools for end users to evaluate the content they come across to make sure they are citing the most authoritative version of
the content available. The presenter will use Poll Everywhere to engage the audience by showing examples of articles and
asking whether the audience can tell the current status of the documents. The audience will learn about the CrossMark
version of record service and the importance of educating users about how to locate current information.

Researchers--we want your feedback

We've been learning a lot the past few months through our series of eFocus groups. So far we've showed our CrossMark prototype to two groups of publishers. Tomorrow we'll hear from librarians. And in September we will hold two groups for researchers.

In addition to these eFocus groups, we will be conducting usability studies of our prototype system in preparation for the pilot later this fall.

CrossMark will provide information to researchers about whether the scholarly content they find on the web is reliable. They will be able to determine whether an instance of an article, for example, is an official "version of record" being maintained and updated by the publisher. This maintained status will be indicated by a logo that will be common to all participating publisher content. When users click on the logo, they'll get useful information such as whether the document is current, whether it is being updated, and where the official version lives. It may also have additional valuable information about the peer review process, funding sources, or the location where relevant data has been deposited.

So you can see why it is important that our interface makes it as clear as possible to researchers how to find the status of the document.

That's where you come in. Please sign up for one of our focus groups or let us know if you'd like to participate in a simple and painless usability test.

And for qualified reseachers, we even have a thank you gift for participating.

Sign up for the September 16 group.

Sign up for the September 17 group.

Librarians needed for eFocus group on CrossMark

CrossRef's CrossMark service will help researchers assess the creditability of scholarly articles and other content. The Scholarly Publishing Roundtable Report issued this year called for

...the clear identification and use of [Version of Record] VoR wherever and whenever feasible. The new "CrossMark" initiative announced by the CrossRef organization...provides such a mechanism for the VoR to be given an electronic watermark by the publisher so that the stewarded version is properly identified, tracked, and linked from the publisher's platforms to other sites also housing and providing access to the VoR.
--Report and Recommendations
from the Scholarly Publishing Roundtable
page 15
We are conducting several eFocus groups for librarians to get reactions to CrossMark and to improve our prototype. These groups will be remotely held--you can participate from the convenience of your own computer. Two groups will be held in August: Wednesday August 11 and Wednesday August 25.

Find out more and register to attend. Remember, these groups are for librarians only.

If you are interested but are not eligible or these dates are not convenient for you, sign up for our CrossMark Information list to stay up to date on future developments, including future webinars and demos.

Rejuvenating Public Sector Science

A conference on restoring independent regulatory science
Special session:
“A Common Standard for Journals' Conflict of Interest Disclosure”
Conflict of interest reporting in the scientific and medical literature has come under increasing scrutiny in recent years. Failures to disclose conflicts of interest have become front page news, and a major embarrassment to publishers, editors, and professional societies. At this special afternoon session of the Center for Science in the Public Interest’s “Rejuvenating Public Sector Science” conference, panelists will discuss a Model Conflict of Interest Disclosure Policy for use by scientific and medical journals. This model policy was developed over the past year by a group of editors and bioethicists as one possible approach to reducing the incidence of these recurring scandals. Sheldon Krimsky, Professor of Urban and Environmental Policy at Tufts University, will present the problem; Merrill Goozner, Director, Integrity in Science, Center for Science in the Public Interest, and Thomas Babor, Associate Editor-in-Chief, Addiction, will discuss the proposal; and Hugh A. Tilson, Editor-in-Chief, Environmental Health Perspectives, and Jeremy Theobald of the UK’s Committee on Publication Ethics will respond to the proposal. Please join us!
