Through CrossRef, libraries can create links to CrossRef member publishers without signing bilateral linking agreements with each publisher and without having to track publishers' individual linking schemes. The CrossRef system also serves as a source of metadata to enhance OpenURL-based local link resolvers and supports DOI re-direction for the purposes of localized linking within library holdings. Some libraries have created their own link resolvers, and many libraries purchase the services of one of a number of vendors who now provide link resolution software.
In most cases, information providers (publisher, database producers, and so on) use CrossRef to add DOIs to their content and databases, so libraries do not need to use CrossRef for DOI retrieval alone. If libraries host local content, the content providers should add DOIs before delivering the content. Users browsing online content will see DOI links and click them; there is no charge for clicking and following DOIs links.
There is no charge for libraries to get a CrossRef
account to retrieve DOIs or metadata. To open a library account, `review,
complete, and submit the CrossRef library agreement. If you are using a local link server please be prepared to enter some information as
shown in this form.
Local Link Servers: When a library is using a local linker server a change must be made to the library's web site which places a cookie into the browsers of library patrons. This cookie is necessary to let the DOI central registry (the resolver at dx.doi.org) know that the patron belongs to the library and their requests must be channel back through the library's link server. Please see the IDF's document on Local Link Servers and the appropriate copy problem.
