The CrossRef service is primarily intended as a machine-to-machine transaction model that allows publishers to automatically exchange linking information. However the system does have a user interface through which all transactions can be initiated manually. In addition, this interface provides valuable resources for even advanced users to monitor the status of jobs submitted automatically and to investigate issues and problems.
As CrossRef has grown, many smaller publishers, affiliates, and libraries have requested simpler and, in some cases, manual ways to interact with the CrossRef system to enable organizations with less sophisticated resources to participate. These needs are being meet through tools offered on our web site (www.crossref.org) as well as through the system's user interface (doi.crossref.org)
