Deposits > Components

DOIs may be assigned to items that are part of a journal article, book chapter or any other content item. A component would typically be a figure, table or image which is part of or referred to by the parent item. Assigning a DOI to a component allows direct linking to the component item. Components may belong to more than one parent item, that is two journal articles may include the same component DOI (however which ever deposits the component last will specify the metadata for the component itself)

Components have their own metadata and may be deposited at the same time as their parent DOI or after the parent was deposited by using the sa_component element in the 4.3.0 schema.

Components have their own metadata which is separate from that of their parent(s). Currently there is no support for querying CrossRef to discover components but a list of components belonging to a given (parent) DOI may be retrieved using an XML query.
