Abstract

The induction period for the formation of oxide particles on tungsten was found to be inversely proportional to and exponentially related to 1/T indicating an activation energy of . The particles appear to be irregularly shaped, and their distribution is crystallograpically nearly homogeneous. It is proposed that the length of the induction period is determined primarily by the rate of penetration of oxygen into the tungsten lattice.
