Cognate versus xenocrystic olivines in kimberlites – A review
2021, Earth-Science ReviewsCitation Excerpt :This mirrors the relative differences in the bulk rock composition of these two groups of volcanics (Moore et al., 2008). Several studies have documented internal compositional complexity in kimberlitic olivines (e.g. Kamenetsky et al., 2008; Bussweiler et al., 2015; Sobolev et al., 2015; Cordier et al., 2015; Howarth and Taylor, 2016; Howarth and Gross, 2019). A comprehensive review of this chemical complexity is beyond the range of this study, but a recurring theme is that Ni and Mg # frequently show a decoupled behaviour, with decreasing Mg # accompanied by invariant or a very limited change in Ni concentration, in a transition zone separating core and rim (Fig. 3, adapted from Cordier et al., 2015).
