The strategy of dispersal behaviour in some Carabidae species of Southeastern Europe

Carabid Beetles: Ecology and Evolution

Part of the book series: Series Entomologica ((SENT,volume 51))

Summary

According to the results of field experiments conducted in 1991 in south-west Moldova the special features of the running and flight movements of five dominant species of carabid beetles are discussed. Only Anisodactylus signatus Panz. had any time differences between running and flight movements during one day. The hygrophilous spring-summer species of the genus Stenolophus had absolute prevalence of flight above movement on foot during all seasons. Species with autumn reproduction had a period of dispersal by flight preceding the period of maximum dispersal on foot. The specimens of the young generation had most flight activity, and the mature specimens of both sexes had maximum of activity on foot.
