Your Similarity Check administrator account

Once Turnitin has enabled your Similarity Check account, as the main editorial contact provided on your application form, you become the Similarity Check account administrator. As an administrator, you create and manage the users on your account, and you decide how your organization uses the iThenticate tool.

This page explains how to set up your personal account and find your way around if you’re using iThenticate v1. If you’re using iThenticate v2, go to the Turnitin website instead.

iThenticate v1 or iThenticate v2?

There are now two versions of iThenticate available. Most subscribers are on v1, and the instruction on this website explain how to set up and use v1. Some new subscribers can start using v2 from September 2021 - we’ll let new subscribers know if v2 is appropriate for them when they apply. You can find out more about iThenticate v2 on our blog.

To work out which version you’re on, take a look at the website address that you use to access iThenticate. If you go to ithenticate.com then you are using v1. If you a bespoke URL, https://crossref-[your member ID].turnitin.com/ then you are using v2.

Your Similarity Check account for administrators in iThenticate v1

Log in to your administrator account (v1)

  1. Start from the link in the invitation email from noreply@ithenticate.com with the subject line “Account Created” and click Login
  2. Enter your username and single-use password
  3. Click to agree to the terms of the end-user license agreement. These terms govern your personal use of the service. They’re separate from the central Similarity Check service agreement that your organization has agreed to.
  4. You will be prompted to choose a new password
  5. Click ​Change Password​ to save.

Reset your password (v1)

  1. Start from iThenticate
  2. Click Login, then click Forgot Password. Enter your email address and click Submit
  3. You’ll receive a password reset link by email. Click the link in the email, choose a new password, and click Reset Password.

Change your email address or password (v1)

  1. Start from iThenticate
  2. Enter your username and password
  3. Go to Profile
  4. To change your email address, remove your current address from the ​Email​ field, enter your new email in the same field, and click ​Update Profile​ to save.
  5. To change your password, enter a new password in the Change Password field, repeat it in the Confirm Password field, and click ​Update Profile​ to save.

Find your way around for admins (v1)

In the main navigation bar at the top of the screen, you will see several tabs:

  • Folders: this is the main area of iThenticate, where you upload, manage, and view documents for checking
  • Settings: configure the iThenticate interface
  • Account Information: manage your account, including your user profile and account usage
  • Manage Users: add and manage your account users
