You don’t have to sign up to anything in order to use our REST API. That means we don’t necessarily know who is using it, although we see millions of hits every day. If you are using it in your projects and would like to share, please let us know and we’ll add you to this page.

Here is a list of known projects that (to our knowledge) are using the REST API. Also take a look at some case studies on our blog.

Organizations that want to get and reuse Crossref metadata can do this in a number of ways. Crossref offers a number of APIs that are free with no performance or service guarantees and certain restrictions. Organizations who need to retrieve a lot of metadata and use Crossref metadata in production services can become an Affiliate and pay for a query account.

Affiliates can use their account to access the XML query API and submit large batches of queries.

There are fees for the Affiliate query account.

If you are interested in signing up as an Affiliate then go to the application form.

Multiple resolution

Content can travel from place to place online, and it can also live in multiple locations. With Multiple Resolution, you can assign multiple URLs to a single metadata record. Members often use multiple resolution for co-hosted content or content in transition from one platform to another. Instead of resolving directly to a single page a multiple resolution-enabled link will instead land on an interim page. The interim page presents a list of link choices to the end user.

Obligations & Limitations

A single member may register multiple URLs for their content but multiple resolution most often involves coordination between multiple parties. One member needs to deposit the DOIs and metadata as the primary depositor. The primary depositor is typically the DOI prefix owner of the content being registered, and will commit to maintaining the metadata record. If second (or third) parties are involved, they will only be able to add and update secondary URLs for existing records.

Multiple resolution interim pages can be set up for an entire DOI prefix or for individual titles. Members should supply an interim page template for their Multiple Resolution content.

Getting started

You’ll need to let us know who and what content is involved in your multiple resolution project, and send us your interim page and of course your additional URLs. Steps to implement are available in our Get Started guide.

Preprints

Our members asked for the flexibility to register content at different points in the publishing lifecycle, so we’ve extended our infrastructure to support members who want to register preprints.

Our custom support for preprints will ensure that links to these publications persist over time; they are connected to the full history of the shared research results; and the citation record is clear and up-to-date.

Specifically, registering preprints with us enables features such as:

Persistent identifiers for preprints to ensure successful links to the scholarly record over the course of time via the DOI resolver.

Content registration for preprints with custom metadata that reflect researcher workflows from preprint to formal publication.

Notification of links between preprints and formal publications that may follow (journal articles, monographs, etc.).

Reference linking for preprints, connecting up the scholarly record to associated literature

Auto-update of ORCID records to ensure that preprint contributors get credit for their work.

Preprint and funder registration to automatically report research contributions based on funder and grant identification.

Discoverability: we make the metadata available for machine and human access, across multiple interfaces (e.g. REST API, OAI-PMH, Crossref Metadata Search).

Obligations & Limitations

Members depositing preprints need to make sure they:
- Register content using the posted content metadata schema
- Respond to our match notifications that a manuscript / version of record (AM/VOR) has been registered and link to that within seven days.
- Label the manuscript as a preprint clearly, above the scroll on the preprint landing page, and ensure that any link to the AM/VOR is also prominently displayed above the scroll.

It’s important to clearly label the content type so we can ensure that the connections between preprints and the associated literature are clearly visible, to both humans and machines.

Fees

We have a dedicated fee structure for preprints. Please see our fees page for more information.

Questions

Are you an existing Crossref member who wants to assign preprint DOIs? Let’s talk about getting started or migrating any existing content over to the dedicated preprint deposit schema.

Interested in becoming a Crossref member to assign DOIs to your preprints? Contact our membership team so we can answer any questions and get you set up.

Linking research funding and published outcomes

Funding data is used by funders to track the publications that result from their grants.

Publishers can contribute by depositing the funding acknowledgements from their publications as part of their standard metadata. The deposit should include funder names, funder IDs, and associated grant numbers.

Funder names from acknowledgements should be matched with the corresponding unique funder ID from the Funder Registry, a curated list of over 13,000 international funding bodies.

Funding data can be searched via our funder search interface or programmatically via our REST API. This data not only clarifies the scholarly record, but makes life easier for researchers who may need to comply with requirements to make their published results publicly available.

How to collect and register funding data

Ask authors to submit the names of their funder(s) and grant numbers when they submit their manuscript
or

Extract funder names from the text of accepted manuscripts

Match funder names to their corresponding Funder ID in the Funder Registry

Deposit funder name(s), ID(s) and grant number(s) for each DOI with Crossref. Visit our support site for funding data schema and guidelines

You can register funding data as a stand alone deposit (useful for backfiles) or as part of your standard metadata deposit (for current content)

Make use of our search interfaces and REST API to retrieve metadata for your own analysis, or to check the metadata we hold for your publications.

Please contact our support team with any questions about depositing or retrieving funding data.

Give and get metadata that’s open and useful

Our REST API exposes the metadata that publishers provide Crossref when they register their content with us. And it’s not just the bibliographic metadata either. Funding data, license information, full-text links, ORCID iDs, abstracts, and Crossmark updates, are all available, if included in the publishers’ metadata.

Numerous tools and services rely on our metadata, be they for search, annotation, sharing, or analysis. Some common tasks for using our REST API include:

Text and data mining (see below)

Auditing funder mandates

Identifying author publications

Many familiar brands use our metadata through this modern machine-interface. Check out the case studies from people like Authorea and SHARE.

Overview

Search, facet, filter or sample metadata from thousands of publisher members via our REST API. The information is continually updated as members update and add to their metadata with us. The REST API helps unlock the value behind the information publishers are depositing, by making it available to query easily and to integrate into other tools and services.

No sign-up is required to use the REST API, and the data can be treated as facts from publisher members. Therefore it is not subject to copyright and available to use for whatever purpose you may have.

Text and data mining

A pragmatic solution to interrogate content, text and data mining simplifies access for researchers who want to mine and analyze content on scholarly publisher sites. Because more science and research is being done programmatically, researchers increasingly need to access full-text content for data mining and analysis. Researchers need a way to avoid the hassle of negotiating individual bilateral agreements with publishers, and publishers needn’t negotiate bilateral agreements with thousands of researchers.

Members can include the Uniform Resource Identifiers (URIs) for their full text and access indicators (usage license or license waiver) along with the other publication metadata they deposit with Crossref. Including this information in the metadata makes it easy for researchers to access available content.

What are the benefits?

The transaction costs of text and data mining become less of a hurdle for both researchers and publishers, who spend less time making individual access arrangements and more time researching and publishing. Crossref does not charge a fee for negotiating access for text and data mining.

How does it work?

Here’s how text and data mining with Crossref works:

Step 1: The publisher deposits the URI for their full text and license/waivers along with other publication metadata at Crossref.

Step 2: The researcher finds content of interest registered with Crossref (e.g., journal articles) using their preferred discovery service.

Step 3: The researcher retrieves metadata for each piece of registered content, including license information.

Step 4: The researcher makes a full-text request from the publisher.

Step 5: If the publisher requires it, the researcher must read and click to accept the publisher’s Terms & Conditions of use via Crossref’s click-through negotiation service.

Step 6: The Publisher grants the researcher subscription rights and returns the full text.

Researchers and text miners can access content URIs and license information via the Crossref REST API.

If you are a publisher and would like to begin depositing URIs and access indicators, please email us at tdm@crossref.org

Version 1.0

https://doi.org/10.13003/CED-terms-of-use

Who are we?

Crossref is a not-for-profit membership organization providing certain technology services to the scholarly community on a noncommercial basis.

What is Crossref Event Data?

Crossref Event Data [the “Service”] is a Crossref service which provides a unique record of the relationship between web activity and specific scholarly content items (e.g. a journal article which has been referenced on a Wikipedia page). The Service is a hub for the collection, storage and distribution of data concerning these relationships. When a relationship is observed between a Crossref-registered content item and a specific web activity, the data is expressed in the Service as an “Event”. An “Event” is the record of a relationship between an item of registered content and a specific activity. The Service provides Events from a variety of web sources. Each web source is referred to as a “Data Contributor”. A “Data Contributor” means the location where a relationship was observed. The Events, and all original data from the Data Contributor, are available in the Service via an API.

What are the Terms of Use for Crossref Event Data?

To facilitate data access and maximal reuse, all Events provided in the Service are tagged with a license that is conformant with the principles laid out in the Open Definition. This ensures that data made available in the Service can be made publicly available and reused, in accordance with the conditions of the specific licence associated with each Event. To this end, the service will only include data from Data Contributors who can provide this to the service via a license conformant with the Open Definition.

Consumers of the Service must ensure they abide by the conditions set out in the license tagged to each Event. In addition, consumers must also ensure to comply with any conditions set out in both the Data Contributor’s Privacy Policy as well as the Crossref Privacy Policy.

The Crossref Event Data service will respect the restrictions provided in robots.txt to ensure the service does not follows links when directed not to by these files. In addition, like search engines, Crossref runs software which visits websites. Events from our Newsfeeds, Reddit Links and Web sources are derived in this way.

Data from all Data Contributors is made available in the Service via the Creative Commons CC-0 1.0 license waiver, with the exception of the following Data Contributors listed below:

Data Contributor

Terms of Use / License

Crossref Metadata

Made available without restriction

Privacy

In addition to the licence associated with each Event, consumers of the Service must also ensure to comply with any conditions set out in the both the Crossref Privacy Policy as well as the Data Contributor’s own Privacy Policy. It’s a Service requirement that you adhere to the conditions stated in these policies. Every Event we provide via an API will contain the link to the Crossref Terms of Use page, where all the information and links you need regarding use and reuse will be available.

Where there are specific privacy policies of which Crossref is aware, that are associated with a particular Data Contributor, they are listed below.

Open for your interpretation

Now available in Beta

Want to discover how research is being shared, liked and commented on in social media? What about which articles are referenced on Wikipedia, mentioned on Reddit or have post-publication annotations in Hypothes.is? Crossref Event Data allows anyone to discover this and more, all from the one centralized location.

A collaborative initiative by Crossref and DataCite, Event Data meets a growing community need by offering transparency around the way interactions with scholarly research occur online, outside of publisher platforms

These interactions are made up of a number of individual ‘events’ such as a bookmark, a comment, a social share, or a link. With tens of thousands of events occurring every day at a rate of approximately one per second, there’s a wealth of insight that can be derived by analyzing and interpreting this data. And we’re here to help you do just that.

Event Data records and stores this activity and make it available as a raw data record for anyone interested in getting a view of how content registered with us transverses the online world. As the data is transparent and traceable, this means everyone will have access to information about the provenance and context of every event we curate in our service.

Event Data does not provide metrics, totals or interpretations; what is does provide is the raw data to help you facilitate your own analysis, giving you the freedom to integrate the data into your own systems.

Event Data Beta is now available!

Event Data is currently under development, with a production service launch expected in late 2017. But as we don’t like developing in the dark, our Event Data Beta service is open to everyone and we encourage you to take a look at the data and send us your feedback. All the data you collect from Crossref Event Data is licensed for public sharing and reuse, according to our Terms of Use. However until Event Data is in production mode, we do not recommend building any commercial or customer-based tools off the data.

For more information and to access Beta, take a look at our Event Data User Guide.

A word of warning too, our development process means that we like to break things often just so we can build them back better each time. So while we can’t guarantee the reliability of Beta, it is the perfect aperitif for the curious.

How does it work?

Luckily, once a publisher registers content with us, we have a way of keeping track of it. Using an item’s Crossref DOI, we are able to find out when it has been saved, shared, liked, referenced or commented on in a range of different environments; from social sites like Twitter and Facebook, to reference and blog sites like Wikipedia and ResearchBlogging. We are also able to capture the links between authors, datasets and content items as they are added into the metadata deposited with DataCite and Crossref.

As the service matures, we will continue to connect with new data sources, ensuring our coverage of activity grows with time.

Where does our data come from?

The Events in our service are mostly collected and curated by us from the data sources, but some are produced by our partners. Crossref Event Data currently contains Events from the following data sources:

Data source

Event type

What are the benefits?

Our data is open, transferrable, and portable.

Regular updates from data contributors and reliable, secure storage.

Raw data, free of charge with the addition of an SLA provided at favorable rates.

A community-led initiative and data from a neutral source.

Once launched in production, your organization may need an extra reliable Event Data service. If so, then you may want to ask us about a service-level agreement.

Who is it for?

Publishers and publishing platforms
By analyzing and interpreting our data collection, publishers or content distributors can use the event records to undertake metric-lead analysis to help drive their business needs.

General and altmetrics service providers
As we are a centrally-managed resource, third party vendors can collect real-time data from the one location to enrich, analyze, interpret and report via their own tools. Additionally, the optional benefit of an SLA with us means that we are a reliable and flexible source of data.

Bibliometricians
Bibliometricians can use our trusted raw data as the underlying data for their research. Our data is made easily accessible to researchers in a single, normalized format across a variety of sources. Additionally, as Event Data data is auditable, researchers will be assured that all data we collect is matched to the evidence and context from the source.

Journal editors
Editors can use our records to quickly find reviewers based on publication network analysis, identify new areas to grow author submissions and track the reach of submissions selected for publication. In addition, our records can help editor’s to attract authors by offering data on the audience’s research interest, track the full-scope of article dissemination and gain a better understanding of how the publications they manage compare to each other.

Funders
Funders can use Event Data to isolate and track the dissemination and usage of the research they funded outside of the scholarly literature.

Want to learn more?

Take a look at our technical documentation in the Event Data User Guide, read our Terms of Use, and then plug into the Event Data Query API to get started.

For membership questions, including arranging a service-level agreement, please contact Jennifer Kemp.
Crossmark gives readers quick and easy access to the current status of a piece of content. With one click, you can see if content has been updated, corrected or retracted and access valuable additional metadata provided by the publisher.

Benefits

Publishers can reassure readers that they’re keeping their content up-to-date and showcase additional metadata.

Researchers and librarians can easily see the changes to the content they are reading, find out who funded the research, what licenses apply to the content and more.

Anyone can access the Crossmark metadata through our REST API, providing a myriad of opportunities for integration with other systems and analysis of changes to the scholarly record.

How it works

Publishers place the Crossmark button close to the title of a piece of content on their web pages and in PDFs, and commit to informing us if there is an update such as a correction or retraction. They also send additional metadata such as authors’ ORCIDs and the funders behind the research.

When a reader clicks on the button a pop-up box appears that headlines the current status of the content: up-to-date, updates available, or retracted, and also displays all of the additional information. Watch the video below to find out more:

How to participate

Publishers participate in Crossmark by depositing additional metadata for their content and adding a snippet of code to their DOI landing pages to generate the Crossmark button and link. Find out more about how to get started.

Obligations & fees

As a publisher participating in Crossmark, you agree to:

Maintain your content and promptly register any updates

Include the Crossmark button on all digital formats (HTML, PDF, ePub)

Implement Crossmark using the script provided by us

Not alter the Crossmark button in any way other than adjusting its size.

There are fees for Crossmark.

For editorial originality, Similarity Check helps editors compare the text of submitted papers for similarity.

Similarity Check is a service for editors who want an extra check. The service helps our publisher members to actively engage in efforts to prevent scholarly and professional plagiarism by providing their editorial teams with access to Turnitin’s powerful text comparison tool, iThenticate.

With editors under increased pressure to assess higher volumes of manuscript submissions each year, the iThenticate tool provides immediate feedback regarding a manuscript’s similarity to other published academic and general web content. And with a database of over 50 million full-text scholarly content items, editors can be confident that iThenticate will provide a comprehensive and reliable addition to their workflow.

As Similarity Check members contribute their own published content into iThenticate’s database of full-text literature, the service is open to any Crossref member who is actively publishing DOI-assigned article content.

Benefits

While there are several plagiarism screening tools available, using iThenticate as a Similarity Check member is unique as it creates a symbiotic relationship between content-owners and Turnitin. Similarity Check members enjoy cost-effective use of iThenticate because they contribute their own published content into Turnitin’s database of full-text literature. This means that as the number of Similarity Check members grow, so too does the size of the content database powering iThenticate. More content in the database, means greater peace of mind for editors looking to determine a manuscript’s originality.

Turnitin also provide Similarity Check members with access to additional features in iThenticate, such as enhanced text-matches within the document viewer. And with access to Turnitin’s dedicated Similarity Check support team, our members always have a direct line to Turnitin in order to discuss any iThenticate technical or billing queries.

How it works

In return for a reduced rate of access to iThenticate, Similarity Check members allow Turnitin to index their full catalogue of current and archival published content as this ensures the highest level of text-matching accuracy. This means that the service is only available to publishers who are actively publishing DOI-assigned content.

Turnitin index members content directly via their Content Intake System. Their CIS accesses our metadata daily to collect the full-text content links provided by our members within their DOI deposit metadata. Turnitin follow these URLs and index the content found at each location. If full-text content is protected by authentication, then the member’s hosting provider must whitelist Turnitin’s IP range to ensure their content is accessible for indexing purposes.

On application to join, members must ensure they have full-text URLs present in at least 90% of their article-level DOI metadata (across all the member’s journal prefixes, if applicable). These URLs need to point directly to the full-text PDF, HTML or plain text content. Member’s must also ensure that these links are included in all future deposits too.

Once member’s meet the eligibility criteria for Similarity Check, Turnitin will provide them with access to iThenticate. Using iThenticate, members will be able to upload their own manuscripts to compare against the full corpus of published academic and general web content in Turnitin’s database. iThenticate provides a similarity score and a highlighted set of matches to similar text. Editors can then further review matches in order to make their own decision regarding a manuscript’s originality.

How to participate

If you are a Crossref publisher member and are assigning article-level DOIs which include the URL to the full-text PDF, HTML or plain text content, then you are eligible to join Similarity Check. Please follow the steps below to apply:

Review the membership Terms & Conditions on this page and read through Turnitin’s service agreement.

Ensure that you have included full-text URLs in the at least 90% your Crossref article-level DOI deposits and that Turnitin’s IP range will have access to your content.

Complete the online registration form.

Sign a copy of the service agreement and email it back to crossref@turnitin.com.

Turnitin and Crossref will then review your application and test your DOI metadata to ensure that your content is able to be indexed. Once this is confirmed, you will be able to begin using iThenticate.

For more information about Turnitin’s IP range or for how to include full-text URLs in your DOI metadata, refer to our get started guide. Full technical instructions are available on our help site.

Obligations and fees

Fees

Similarity Check fees are in two parts: a per-document checking fee and an annual administrative fee. Per-document checking fees are paid directly to Turnitin and are significantly less than those charged by Turnitin to stand-alone iThenticate users. Additionally, volume discounts also apply. The annual administrative fee is paid to us and is set at 20% of your Crossref annual membership fee.

Terms and conditions

The Similarity Check service is a program being offered by Crossref to its members, on an optional basis. The Similarity Check Service is designed to aid Crossref member publishers in identifying circumstances in which works being considered for publication may have been previously published in whole or in part by (i) facilitating the creation of the Similarity Check Database, (ii) identifying appropriate providers of software tools that can compare the text of works being considered for publication to the text of other works, including those in the Similarity Check Database, and (iii) establishing general recommended terms of participation for Participating Publishers and the identified software provider.

All Crossref publisher members in good standing who currently meet all Crossref member obligations shall be eligible to participate in Similarity Check as “Participating Publishers.” Participating Publishers must make substantially all of their Publisher Content (as further defined below) available for inclusion in the Similarity Check database. To meet the required level of participation, the Participating Publisher must deposit the content associated with at least 90% of that publisher’s deposited DOIs for full text journal articles, although 100% inclusion of Publisher’s full text content in machine readable form (journal articles, conference proceedings articles, books and books chapters and theses and dissertations) (“the Publisher Content”) is the agreed goal. Components (defined as subparts of content that are generally not citable) and datasets will not be included, and will not be considered “Publisher Content” for purposes of determining the level of participation. This requirement will also apply to the content associated with the Participating Publisher DOI’s deposited monthly with Crossref on an ongoing basis.

In addition, all Participating Publishers will enter into an agreement directly with the plagiarism detection vendor (the “Vendor”) providing the software platform for the Similarity Check services. A form agreement can be found here: Similarity Check Service Agreement

Qualifications:

Each Similarity Check Participating Publisher, subject to Vendor’s compliance with the service level standards and reporting obligations contained in the Vendor’s agreement with Similarity Check and in the Vendor’s agreement with each Participating Publisher:

Must make Publisher Content available in the Similarity Check database on an ongoing basis, within no more than 7 days of digital availability, by both registering DOIs for Publisher Content with Crossref within this period and enabling Vendor to index Publisher Content. (Failure of the Vendor to index content made available by a participant will not affect the right of the Participating Publisher to use the Similarity Check service. The Participating Publisher is only responsible for making content available for indexing. Failure to make content available for indexing could result in suspension of the Similarity Check Service for a Participating Publisher.)

Must deposit with Crossref, along with DOIs for the Publisher Content, full, correct and current metadata including article title and all authors.

Must make the full text of the Publisher Content available, as part of the Similarity Check Database, to other Participating Publishers in the context of the interface provided by the Vendor as part of the content checking process. Users of the Vendor’s service who are not Participating Publishers will only see snippets of text with a DOI link to the Participating Publisher’s site, where the Participating Publisher will have full discretion to determine whether and on what terms to user may be given access to the full text.

May not submit works to be checked against the Similarity Check Database through the Vendor’s service until substantially all the journal articles included in the Publisher Content has been made available to the Vendor for inclusion in the Similarity Check database (i.e., >90% of the journal content associated with eligible Participating Publisher DOIs on deposit with Crossref).

Must have full-text URLs (also known as “as-crawled URLs”) on deposit at Crossref that point to the full-text PDF (preferable), HTML or plain text content.

Is responsible for verifying that their in-house and outside editorial staff and reviewers do not use their access to the Similarity Check Service as a “back-door” method for getting free full-text access to included content. The steps to be used to accomplish this should include (i) limiting access to the service to those employees and outside contractors who, in the Participating Publisher’s reasonable judgment, have a need to use the service; (ii) requiring each employee and contractor using the service to register using his or her real name and current job title; (iii) limiting submissions to the service for checking to those that pertain to a publication published by the Participating Publisher; (iv) taking reasonable steps to ensure that account information and passwords used to access the service are kept confidential and are not shared beyond the permitted users of the service; (v) submitting to an audit of users, to be conducted by the Vendor at the Vendor’s cost no more often than once per year, to determine if unauthorized users are being given or are getting access to the Vendor’s services through the Participating Publisher; and (vi) taking reasonable steps to monitor use and potential abuse of the service, based on usage reports to be provided by Vendor.

Shall be entitled to the number of accounts with Vendor that are reasonably necessary for the Participating Publisher to make use of the Service, with no set limit on the number of accounts on a per-publisher basis.

Shall establish a procedure within the Participating Publisher for help desk and support questions regarding the use of the Vendor’s software, and shall made arrangements for appropriate training for one or more persons including, where feasible, on-site training at the Vendor’s facilities, to facilitate efficient contact between the Participating Publisher and Vendor. The established procedure shall include the designation of a single point of contact with the Participating Publisher unless otherwise agreed in the agreement between the Participating Publisher and Vendor. Such individual agreements may also include additional support and service commitments on the part of the Vendor.

Shall establish a procedure for informing authors that works submitted for publication may be checked through a plagiarism detection system and that, as part of this process, the submitted work will be copied for internal checking purposes and that a copy may be retained, although not further disseminated or integrated into the Similarity Check or other, Vendor supplied databases.

Similarity Check Monitoring and Verification

After an initial start up period of 3 months from the commencement of participation by a particular publisher, Crossref will have the ability to review the level of participation of Participating Publishers to confirm that they are meeting the obligations of the service. A Participating Publisher who meets those qualifications will have two status indicators available for use. We expect that publishers will find it valuable to highlight their participation in Similarity Check to demonstrate that they are adding value to the editorial process and cooperating to help ensure that content published as original is properly identified. Suitable logos will be developed that indicate Similarity Check participation, as follows:

“Similarity Check Depositor”: May be displayed on a Participating Publisher’s site and at other locations as set forth in the Similarity Check Trademark Guidelines to indicate that the publisher has satisfied the requirements for participating in Similarity Check. This will, by implication, indicate that the publisher is being a “good citizen” in the fight against plagiarism. However, the use of this status indicator does not carry any implication with respect to the plagiarism status of the Participating Publisher’s works.

“Similarity Check Deposited”: May be displayed on articles or other relevant content to indicate that the item has been deposited into the Similarity Check Database. This can act as warning to those who might plagiarize the item.

These phrases and the associated logos will be factual indications that the publisher participates in the Similarity Check service and that a particular work is included in the database used by the Similarity Check service. Their use does not give any indication or assurances about the content of the particular works with which they are associated, including about whether the particular work contains or does not contain plagiarized materials.

During the period that the initial plagiarism detection vendor, Turnitin LLC., is the sole Vendor for the Similarity Check Service, use of the Similarity Check trademarks and/or logos, as described in these Terms and Conditions, will include the phrase “Powered by iThenticate.”

FAQs

Do I need to be a Crossref member to join Similarity Check?
Yes, the Similarity Check service is only available to publisher members who are depositing article-level DOIs with us.

What technology are you using to provide this service?
We have partnered with leading plagiarism screening systems vendor Turnitin to create the Similarity Check database and to use their iThenticate tool for checking documents against the database. As a Similarity Check member, you will need to sign a service agreement with Turnitin to use their system and to provide them with access to your full-text content. This agreement has been fully reviewed and approved by us and several of our member publishers and should not require any additional negotiation.

What is the difference between Similarity Check and iThenticate?
Similarity Check is a service specifically for our publisher members. It provides members with cost-effective access to the iThenticate text comparison software from Turnitin. Other organizations and individuals can use the iThenticate service directly by contacting iThenticate.

Similarity Check members benefit from a tailored iThenticate experience that includes read-only access to the full text of articles in the Similarity Check database for comparison purposes, discounted checking fees and unlimited user accounts per organization.

I’m not able to include full-text URLs in my DOI metadata. Can Turnitin index my content using another method?
No. To ensure the most robust, secure and complete indexing of content, Turnitin is only able to support the direct-indexing method. This involves following the URLs that member’s provide in their Crossref metadata to find and index full-text content. Turnitin do also operate a general web crawler, called Walker, but this crawler targets general web content and is not suitable for comprehensively indexing full-text, published academic content.

Please contact our member services team with any questions or to get set up, or contact our support team for any technical or troubleshooting questions.

For iThenticate user help, please refer to Turnitin’s Similarity Check User Manual or get in touch with their support team at ccsupport@ithenticate.com

Cited-by

Cited-by lets publishers show authors and readers what other Crossref content is citing their content. It’s a little like reference linking in reverse and lets your readers navigate from your content to the content that is citing it.

Cited-by gives readers of your content the chance to navigate from the article they are on to the content that’s citing it. Watch the video below to find out more:

Benefits

There are many online citation indexing services and databases but what is different about Cited-by is that it lets our members display the Cited-by links on their content on their own website. This benefits the readers of the content because they can get a sense of how often the content has been cited and can easily click the links to go to the citing content. How often something is cited can also be useful information for publishers, authors, research institutions and funders.

How it works

Publishers retrieve metadata records of publications that cite their content. This allows for the display of citations on cited content so readers can see that the content they’re reading is being cited, as in this example:

Obligations & fees

Participation in Cited-by is optional - just deposit references with Crossref.

There is no charge for participation in Cited-by.

Publishers can only start retrieving Cited-by links from us after they start depositing the references for their current content. This keeps the system fair - you link to other publishers and they link to you.

Only the publisher who registers content with Crossref can retrieve the Cited-by data and links for that content. The count of the number of times content is cited is available in Crossref metadata.

Getting Started

Cited-by follows a simple three-step process:

Step 1: Publishers deposit references as part of the regular content registration.

Step 2: Crossref matches the metadata in the references to DOIs to establish a Cited-by relationship in the database. As new content is registered Crossref will automatically update the relationships and notify you of new links.

Step 3: Publishers and hosting platforms query relationships, retrieve the metadata of citing articles and display the links on their website.

Best Practice

Participation in Cited-by is optional, but encouraged.

Because citations can happen any time, Cited-by links must be kept up-to-date. So, publishers should either check regularly for Cited-by links or (if performing XML queries) set the alert attribute to “true”. This means the search will be saved in the system and you’ll get an alert when there is a new match.

Once retrieved, Cited-by links should be included on your website.

Content registration - depositing metadata - is at the core of our infrastructure.

Sending us metadata about your publications returns persistent links for better content discoverability and preservation. Watch the video below to find out more:

Benefits

Publishers of this research join Crossref to let the world know the content exists. They send information about that content–called metadata–to us.

The metadata includes basic fields like titles and dates, but also unique labels that identify the content’s authors, affiliations, funders, and its location on the web. We call those labels persistent identifiers (PIDs).

Crossref metadata is used by numerous systems and organizations, like libraries, funders and others, that together help credit and cite the work, report impact of funding, and track outcomes and activity.

This is Crossref infrastructure. You can’t see infrastructure yet research—and researchers all over the world—rely on it.

How it works

Publishers are encouraged to submit and maintain the fullest possible metadata.

Metadata deposits can be submitted by publishers or agents acting on their behalf, such as hosting platforms and may be made via:

Our manual web deposit form, which accepts manually entered information as well as formatted XML

XML deposit via either the main system or with the REST API

Crossref plugin
for OJS (Open Journal Systems)

Bulk .csv upload of metadata, such as funding and full-text URLs

It is important to note that while we collect, preserve and make metadata available for the scholarly community, we do not correct, edit or change submitted metadata.

Common tasks

Different schema exist for different content types. For example, the preprints schema is different from the journals schema. So, deposits in XML must be prepared according to each schema. See more on content types below.

Corrections and enhancements of submitted metadata are very much encouraged! There is no charge for re-depositing existing metadata.

Content types

Crossref collects metadata and assigns persistent identifiers for many types of scholarly content. There are deposit fees that vary by content type and date of publication. The content types that we currently accept are below.

Journals: at the journal title and article level and includes supplemental materials

Books and reference works: book title and/or chapter-level records, books can be deposited as a monograph, series, or set.

Conference proceedings: information about a single conference and records for each conference paper/proceeding

Reports / working papers: this includes content that is formally published and is published with an ISSN or ISBN.

Standards - includes publications from Standards Development Organizations and Standards Setting Organizations.

Datasets - includes database records or collections. (See also DataCite)

Dissertations - includes single dissertations and theses - not collections.

Posted content: consists of preprints, eprints, working papers, reports, and other types of content that has been posted but not formally published.

Components: typically assigned to parts of a whole, most commonly including figures, tables, and supplemental materials for a journal article or book chapter.
If you have a content type that isn’t listed please contact us.

Those new to the deposit process are especially encouraged to verify and test XML prior to submission.

How to participate

Please see our handy Get Started guide for details.

As this summary shows, the process of registering content and depositing metadata is relatively straightforward:

Step 1: Each new member receives a DOI prefix and account information.

Step 2: Members (or agents acting on their behalf) by using the assigned prefix and by adding their own unique suffix (Prefix + Suffix = DOI).

Step 3: Members (or their agents) prepare their deposit by gathering all DOIs, the URLs where the content sits and all metadata associated with the content.

Step 4: Members (or their agents) deposit their metadata according to the Crossref schema. Our help site offers example formatted deposits for all content types.

Once processed, the DOI is live and clickable after the deposit has been processed (usually within minutes) and the metadata is available for use in systems throughout scholarly communications.

Best practice

Registering content is like dropping a pin to locate your content on the map of scholarly communications.

To make publications discoverable—and to derive the greatest benefit from outbound linking of reference lists–we ask our members to deposit as much metadata as possible.

Richer metadata includes information such as journal title, article author, publication date, page numbers, ISSN, references, abstracts, ORCID iDs, funding information, clinical trials numbers, license information (access indicators for text and data mining) and more. The list will continue to expand as new forms of metadata become embedded.

Obligations & fees

Publisher Member obligations cover in detail the important work of depositing metadata. Thank you for reviewing them!

Our Fees page lists associated deposits costs.

FAQs

Please see our FAQs for more information on content registration.

Additional help is provided in our extensive support pages, to assist you with the important work of registering content.

The collective power of members’ metadata is available for use in a variety of tools and APIs that allow anybody to search and reuse our metadata in sophisticated ways. Watch the video below to find out more:

Benefits

Lots of people need to incorporate scholarly metadata into their software and services. For example:

Manuscript tracking systems

Bibliographic management software

Library systems

Author profiling tools

Specialist subject databases

Scholarly sharing networks

The resulting dissemination of metadata enhances content discoverability. The widespread use of our APIs helps to ensure that the entire community can create robust, persistent and accurate citations of our members’ content, to the benefit of publishers, readers and the organizations that use our metadata delivery services.

How it works

There are two main approaches for getting metadata:

User Interfaces for people: the first table lists a few user interfaces that we provide to access metadata, but you may want to start with our newest, open, most comprehensive, and easiest-to-use human interface, Metadata Search.

APIs for machines: the second table lists a few APIs, but we recommend you first look at our newest and most flexible service, our REST API. Take a look at a list of some of the organizations who rely on our REST API.

If you’re interested in using these tools or APIs for production services, we’ll soon have a service-level offering with access to all supported APIs and metadata, but with extra service and support guarantees. If you are interested in the upcoming service-based offering or the other services please contact our outreach team.

Currently we also have two fee-based services - Crossref Metadata Services (CMS) and Affiliate query accounts that use some of the APIs listed below.

Content negotiation

The APIs listed here provide metadata in a variety of representations (aka output formats). If you want to get access to our metadata in a particular representation (e.g. RDF, BibTex, XML, CSL), you can use content negotiation to retrieve the metadata for a DOI in the representation you want. Content negotiation is supported by a number of DOI registration agencies [is supported by a number of DOI including Crossref, DataCite, and mEDRA.

How to participate - User interfaces for accessing metadata

Crossref provides a number of user interfaces to access Crossref metadata. Some are general purpose, and others are more specialized.

Service Name

Description

Metadata Search

Metadata Search is our primary user interface for searching and filtering of our metadata. It allows users to quickly enter any term and users can search and filter on a number of elements, including ISSN, ORCIDs, funding data and more.It can be used to lookup the DOI for a reference or a partial reference or a set of references.

Simple text query

Simple text query is a tool designed to allow members to easily link their references via DOIs. It allows a member to look up DOIs for multiple formatted references at a time and then deposit these in order to fulfill their reference linking obligations.

How to participate - Machine interfaces (APIs) for accessing metadata

We have a number of APIs for accessing metadata. There is one general purpose API and several specialized ones. The specialized APIs are either designed for our members so that they can manage their metadata or they are APIs based on standards that are popular in the community. Watch the video underneath the table below to find out more:

API Name

Description

REST API

The REST API enables sophisticated, flexible machine and programmatic access to search and filter our metadata. It can be used for example to look up the metadata for a content item or submit a query on an author’s name or find retractions registered with us. It also allows users to search and filter on a number of elements, including a funder, finding all content items with ORCID iDs.

OpenURL

This API lets you lookup a Crossref DOI for a reference using a standard that is popular in the library community and particularly with link resolver services.

OAI-PMH

This API uses a standard popular with the library community that lets you harvest metadata. This is the API used for Crossref Metadata Services (CMS)

XML API

This has primarily been used by our members to manage their reference metadata.

Because Crossref is all about rallying the scholarly community to work together, reference linking is an obligation for all Crossref members and for all current journal content.

It is encouraged for other content types as well, such as books and conference proceedings. Watch the video below to find out more:

Benefits

Persistent links enhance scholarly communications. Reference linking offers important benefits:

Reciprocity: Publishers’ content is linked together and more discoverable because all members link their references.

Crossref acts as a clearinghouse, negotiating reciprocal agreements among all its members so that individual publishers can avoid the inconvenience of signing bilateral agreements to link to persistent content on other platforms. The result is a scholarly communications infrastructure that enables the exchange of ideas and knowledge.

Discoverability: Research travels further when everyone links their references. Because persistent identifier links don’t break if implemented correctly, they will always lead readers to the content they’re looking for, including yours. When the PIDs are displayed, anyone can copy and share them.

This will enable better tracking of where and when people are talking about and sharing scholarly content, including in social media.

How it works

Reference linking means hyperlinking to Crossref DOIs when you create your citation list.

This makes it possible for readers to follow a DOI link from the reference list of a published work to the location of the full-text document on a publisher’s platform, building a network infrastructure that enhances scholarly communications on the web.

Reference linking is accomplished by publishers and their production teams, with the assistance of authors and editors who add the links to each reference in their articles.

How to participate

After your organization becomes a Crossref member, you can start to look up the DOIs for your references so that you can add the links to your articles’ reference lists.

Obligations & fees

There is no charge for reference linking.

Reference linking is required for all Crossref members and for all current journal content. Reference linking is encouraged, but not required, for other content types such as books and conference proceedings.

Best practice

New members should start reference linking within 18 months of joining Crossref.

Link the references in your journal back files as well as your current journal articles.

Link references in non-journal content types such as books and conference proceedings.

Make sure the links in your references conform to the DOI display guidelines.

Consider reference linking as just one of the many relationship types that can be deposited with your metadata.

FAQs

What are the query options for references’ DOIs?

Simple Text Query Form, for manual, low volume querying

Simple Text Query upload, to upload reference lists as .txt files; also for a low volume of queries

XML API, for individual or batch requests in formatted XML. This is the preferred method for most members.

Does all of our content have to have reference linking?

Reference linking is a membership obligation for all current journal content. However, members are strongly encouraged to include it for both journal backfile content and non-journal content such as books.

When do the new DOI display guidelines take effect?

Members are encouraged to move to the new guidelines as soon as possible, with everyone hopefully transitioned by spring 2017.

Do I have to redeposit content that used the old display? Will those links still work?

Redepositing isn’t necessary for compliance and no existing links will break because of the display change. We are all about persistent links after all! The change is one of display, not functionality, so existing links will continue to work.

Funder Registry

A veritable who’s who of funders worldwide, the Crossref Funder Registry is a unique taxonomy of grant-giving organizations.

A freely-downloadable file, this registry lists funders and their unique identifiers. It is CC-0 and available to integrate with your own systems.

The registry is donated by Elsevier and updated approximately monthly with new funders. Existing entries are also reviewed to make sure that they are accurate and up to date. If you spot anything that doesn’t look right please get in touch and let us know. You can also download a .csv file of the Funder Registry.

Watch the video below to find out more:

Benefits

There are many benefits of clear, transparent and measurable information on who funded research and where it has been published:

Funding organizations are able to better track the published results of their grants

Research institutions are able to monitor the published outputs of their employees

Publishers are able to analyze the sources of funding for their authors and ensure compliance with funder mandates

Readers and the public benefit from greater transparency on who funded the research and the results of R&D funding.

How it works

Authors acknowledge the funding sources for their research in their publications. Using the Funder Registry, publishers can clearly identify the funders who backed the research, standardize this metadata and send it to us.

We can then make it openly available through funding data search and our API.

How to participate

Publishers: collect funder names and grant numbers from authors via your submission system, or extract them from acknowledgements sections. Match the names with the corresponding funder IDs from the Registry, and add these three additional pieces of metadata - funder name, funder id, and grant number - to your regular Crossref deposits.

Funders: You can view the content that has cited your funding by entering your organization’s name into funding data search. If you prefer a machine-readable query use our REST API. If you have questions about how your organization appears in the registry then please get in touch. There’s also more information on the funder registry and our other services on our funder community page.

Obligations & fees

There are no publisher fees for depositing funding data. Funding data search and our REST API are freely available.

Publishers must include the Funder ID from the Registry for each funder if it is present in the Registry.

Please contact our member services team with any questions or to get set up, or contact our support team for any technical or troubleshooting questions.

Crossref content types

Crossref collects metadata and assigns persistent identifiers for many types of scholarly content. There are deposit fees that vary by content type and date of publication. The content types that we currently accept are below. If you have a content type that isn’t listed please contact us.

-Journals: at the journal title and article level and includes supplemental materials

-Books and reference works: book title and/or chapter-level records, books can be deposited as a monograph, series, or set.

-Conference proceedings: information about a single conference and records for each conference paper/proceeding

-Reports / working papers: this includes content that is formally published and is published with an ISSN or ISBN.

-Standards - includes publications from Standards Development Organizations and Standards Setting Organizations.

-Datasets - includes database records or collections.

-Dissertations - includes single dissertations and theses - not collections.

-Posted content: consists of preprints, eprints, working papers, reports, and other types of content that has been posted but not formally published.

-Components: typically assigned to parts of a whole, most commonly including figures, tables, and supplemental materials for a journal article or book chapter.

Search and reuse Crossref metadata

Crossref provides a number of tools and APIs that allow anybody to search and reuse Crossref metadata in sophisticated ways. There are lots of people who need to incorporate scholarly metadata into their software and services. For example, scholarly sharing networks, library systems, author profiling tools, specialist subject databases or researchers and students looking for a DOI for a reference. Crossref offers open, free services as well as paid-for ones, that let anyone get and reuse Crossref metadata.

The Quick Overview
There are 2 main approaches for getting metadata from the Crossref system:

For People: the first chart includes a few services but you may want to start with our newest, open, easiest-to-user interface - Crossref Metadata Search

For machines or automated processes: charts 2 and 3 outline the options, but we recommend you first look at our newest and most flexible service - the Crossref REST API

The 3 charts on this page show available options for both People & Machine Searching
These charts represent an overview of how users may query the system but much more information is available! Help documentation is abundant and questions may be addressed to support@crossref.org

License information
Crossref asserts no claims of ownership to individual items of metadata and associated Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs). Some services require signing an agreement and paying a fee, some are free but require registering and others are openly available as outlined below.

Terms of service
Crossref makes no guarantees on the availability or performance of the free services.

There are three services for people, all of which are free to use:
Some are general purpose, and others are more specialised.

Crossref Metadata Search

Crossref DOI Query

Citation Matching

The best option for searching and filtering Crossref metadata

Enables a query for a specific DOI by entering bibliographic metadata into a form. Also allows people to build XML searches, based on Crossref’s XML schema, to find a specific DOI.

Enables easy citation list or bibliography linking by submission of cut and pasted reference lists that are matched to DOIs. Members can also deposit references to Crossref using this form. Similar functionality can be found via the Crossref Metadata Search “Reference linking” button

All metadata is included, except references

Returns DOIs, one per search

Returns DOIs only

Response in web browser with option to export JSON

Response in web browser or Crossref-specific XML (XML-XSD or UNIXREF) depending on search used

Output returned in HTML

One-at-a-time searches

One-at-a-time searches

One-at-a-time searches but submission of searchers can be automated. Limit of 1,000 searches per month. If more than the limit is required please see the paid services below.

No agreement required

Terms apply

Registration required

More information

More information

More information

There are several categories of Machine & Automated Searching
We have one general purpose REST API. The specialized APIs outline below are either for publisher members so that they can manage their metadata and link references, for Affiliates incorporating Crossref metadata into production services or they are based on standards popular in the library community.

The first chart shows free options:

REST API

OpenURL

Crossref System API via HTTP GET or POST

Content Negotiation

REST API that enables sophisticated, flexible searching, filtering and sorting

Enables searches using the OpenURL 0.1 or 1.0 standard. Generally used to query for a specific DOI. For libraries/link resolvers

Enables submission of single searches or queries or files with multiple queries (sometimes called “Bulk” or “Batch” queries) using Crossref’s original (i.e. old) System API and HTTP GET and POST.

Works across a number of DOI registration agencies, including Crossref, DataCite and Medra. Allows users to use standard HTTP content negotiation to request a DOI in a number of representations including XML, JSON, BibTex, and various CSL-Styles

Includes all metadata, except for references unless the publisher provides open references

Includes all metadata, except references

Includes all metadata, except references
